The importance of Sleep

Good quality sleep is such a crucial part of our wellbeing. Have you noticed it’s one of the first things to go as our adrenal glands become fatigued, as we enter midlife and as our hormonal balance begins to shift?

Heading to bed only to watch the ceiling, or our sleeping partner, unable to calm our body and brain. Even if we fall asleep straight away, sleep is lighter and more easily disturbed. We stir back into consciousness and the usual trip to the bathroom.

We grew up with wonderful fairy tales of sleeping princesses, believed in the notion that we could ‘sleep like a baby’ (from experience we know that’s rather removed from the truth). As women we live in a fast paced, modern world. If we allow it, we are hooked to technology and more connected than ever. Filling our schedules with a multitude of roles and responsibilities.

It’s a world that is more suitable for men. Our feminine cyclical nature requires a more nurturing flow. No wonder that when we crave sleep, it can become elusive.

Without a good night’s sleep, we wake up feeling tired rather than energized. Unable to concentrate properly, which leads us to forget things and make mistakes. We can feel irritable rather than have a sense of peace and calm. Research also suggests that lack of sleep is related to weight gain, depressed immune system and psychological depression. Sleep loss becomes a roller coaster of cause and effect.

Sleep is especially important in the second half of life – ‘the holy grail’ for a lot of menopausal women.’

Cortisol, the primary stress hormone, has a lot to do with our sleep quality. When our cortisol level remains high at bedtime it’s difficult for us to switch off, relax and fall asleep.

Cortisol is normally high when we get up in the morning. Priming us for what we have planned for the day. There’s a steep drop around noon (hence the feeling of needing an afternoon nap). We regain energy into the evening. Then our lowest levels of cortisol come between 10.00 – 10.30pm encouraging our body toward sleep.

What causes our cortisol levels to remain high at night?

  • Staying up later than the body’s natural signal for sleep.
  • Screen time. Watching T.V and other devices. Both overstimulate the brain and cause the cortisol level to rise.
  • The stresses of normal day to day modern life. The mental and physical fatigue of a busy day. Replaying the ‘dramas’ and conversations of the day as our head hits the pillow.

Creating calm bedtime rituals gives the body a signal to slow down for sleep. Here are some suggestions:-

  • Lighter, nutritious meals eaten earlier in the evening.
  • Allowing a minimum of 30 minutes between T.V/devices and bedtime. (One hour is even better).
  • Taking a shower, reading a book, yoga, quiet meditation or drinking a calming tea.
  • Dimming lights, bedding suited to the temperature and fresh air from open windows if available.
  • Going with your body’s natural craving for sleep even if it means an early bedtime. Slowly bringing your current bedtime back toward 10.00 – 10.30pm.

Getting quality sleep is important for women. It’s an anchor for how we cope with the transition through menopause and beyond. Honouring your own needs during the day and creating evening rituals prior to bedtime help to encourage a restful night’s sleep.

Finding Ourselves in our Stories

Words are powerful yet they are only a small part of our communication with others. The tone with which we speak shares our emotions. The perspective of what we have to say shows the processing of our internal thoughts. Our body language – facial expressions, posture, gestures and eye movement, can support what we are saying or convey an entirely different message altogether.

The words we express are only part of our internal dialogue. At times we find it hard to find just the ‘right’ words to express our opinions, thoughts and feelings. When we do, our words can be misconstrued by the recipient.  It’s not an easy task to communicate effectively with others.

Yet communication is a powerful tool. For learning, confidence, connection, reflection and healing. I’m using my previous blog posts to explore this topic. Hopefully you will find a few strategies and insights to ponder. If you wish to read further there are links below to the full blogs.

The Power of our own Life Story

By the time we reach the third trimester of life, a term defined by author of Smart, Stupid & Sixty Nigel Marsh, much has happened. There are a myriad of experiences to draw meaning from. Lessons learnt from both the good and the bad, the expected and the ones we didn’t see come from ‘left field’. We may feel our story is unimportant or fairly mundane yet in reflection we have the opportunity to explore its richness and find wisdom that’s valuable for both ourselves and others.

Methodically thinking back over parts of our lives can allow for reflection and healing. From the present day perspective it is possible to see past events within a bigger framework of life as a whole. There is the possibility for acceptance and forgiveness for what we remember. Its also possible to see how a particular incident has impacted our lives over time. Even where trauma has been involved, the potential for growth is more likely than us remaining unable to move forward in our lives. (Linda Graham – Resilience expert and author of Bouncing Back).

My own journey of reflection has allowed me to find my voice and gain powerful insight on past events and their impact. My tool of choice has been to write my thoughts within the framework of a blog. There are also other creative means such as poetry, song writing, podcasting, memoir and journalling.

The Courage to Speak Up

Communication is easy when we agree with the views of the other person. We can reinforce each other’s perspective and feel a real sense of connection. The difficulty comes when we see life differently to someone else. In a sense our stories about life collide.

It takes a level of determination and courage to express our own unique point of view. To delve into disagreement rather than maintain an uncomfortable peace. A healthy level of conflict can help clear the air and open up increased respect for the differing needs and perspectives of each other. Its opposite can lead to giving and receiving silent treatment from others. Something detrimental to relationships if left unchecked. Read more in this article by Bernard Golden Ph.D.

Important conversations require some careful planning. Its important to first clarify your own viewpoint. Introduce the possibility of a conversation. You could start with ‘I’ve been thinking about … lately. Do you mind if we set aside a time to chat about it? This gives the other person time to reflect on their own thoughts on the subject. When you’ve created a space for the discussion take your time as things can feel emotionally uncomfortable. It’s also important to avoid distractions.

We can go through life sitting on the sidelines. Feeling our opinions are not valuable or appreciated by others. Increasingly feeling our needs and priorities remain unmet. It takes confidence to find our voice, particularly if we put the fear of how others will react before our own need for expression. Imagine the possibilities of being vulnerable enough to share your opinions more openly. Being your best advocate and the reward of finding your deeper, more authentic, and less censored sense of self.

Using Emotional Intelligence when we communicate

During our lives we are developing knowledge about our world. Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand and manage our own emotions and those of the people around us. When someone has a high degree of emotional intelligence: – they know what they are feeling, what their emotions mean and how they affect others. There is a rich awareness in their story about life.

The skill set for emotional intelligence includes self-awareness, self-management of our own emotions, empathy for others and sound relationships (the heart skills of inspiring and motivating others and effectively managing conflict).

Emotional Intelligence can be improved on with effort and understanding. It is a work in progress, as skills such as conflict resolution may always remain difficult for us in our professional and personal lives.

Communicating with Emotional Intelligence

Leaving a Legacy through our words and stories

When we type words on our devices they have a uniformity. We can choose a particular font to use yet it is not uniquely ours. One thing that is often treasured by others is our handwritten messages to them. Stored within birthday cards, thank you notes and tried and true recipes. They reflect a personal sense of that person deliberately putting pen to paper in their own particular style. When our loved ones are gone they are tangible evidence of their previous existence. I’ve accumulated a special collection of handwritten examples from family members who are no longer alive. I hope to do the same for my own family.

Another thing to ponder is how others will remember your life. From experience I know how difficult it is to write the eulogy of a family member for their funeral. It makes sense to keep a written recollection of particular memories while you are still alive to aid your loved ones in the writing of your own eulogy. Funny stories, things you loved doing, memorable occasions, ways you contributed, can all be included. Also think about meaningful ways you wish to be remembered – favourite songs, verse and special photos that depict your unique life.

In that way your own story transcends your physical presence. You collate the highlights for yourself and allow space for your loved ones to expand the story with their own reflections.

Our life story continually evolves. Over time we add new chapters and revisit previous ones with more clarity. As we interact with others our stories become refined.

There are opportunities along the way for us to record our stories through a range of creative means. Collating our recollections in tangible ways. Finding ourselves in those stories and choosing those reminders of us that will remain beyond our physical existence.

Flourishing in Later Life

When you think of aging well, is your focus on maintaining a youthful appearance and physical vitality or does it mean much more to you? Susan Sands PhD in her recently published book The Inside Story describes three factors that research has demonstrated are vitally important to flourishing in later life. These include maintaining our social connections, finding meaning and purpose and cultivating wholesome emotions such as gratitude.

We are living longer. We’ve added thirty years of life expectancy over the past century and these years have all been added to the latter stage of our lives. We spend a longer period of time living beyond active parenting and paid work. This has created a meaning making challenge of deciding what we do with the additional years we have been gifted with.

Prior to stepping into this phase of our lives we have been busy. Multi-tasking home, family and employment responsibilities. Striving to successfully raise children and mastering our professional careers. Paying off mortgages and staying on top of our bills.

Yet our dilemma may be deciding the framework of these years. The people we desire to be and the life experiences we plan to have. Psychology professor, Laura Carstensen, describes a life-span theory of motivation that views aging as an increased opportunity to focus attention on emotionally meaningful goals and activities. It’s as if we finally realize the finite nature of our lives and decide to act accordingly.

She even suggests we take a much slower pathway through life. Using the first forty years to devote time to our education and apprenticeship to our careers so we can maintain a healthier balance in raising our families. This would allow people to devote more time to full time work later in life in the middle years. Eventually easing our workload to retire later in life if we choose. Even then, we can make valuable forms of contribution to those we come in contact with.

It will require society changing its view of aging to enable a more positive view. To value the gained wisdom and knowledge acquired by elders and ensure they are active contributors to the well-being of others. In turn, their personal happiness also increases.

How do we foster those qualities that help us age well?

Social Connection –

  • Once we reach midlife it is often a time of unravelling our lives and also our relationships. It can be a time where new friendships form as we move from being parents and workers to the next stage of our lives. Even if some of those roles remain, they often evolve. For example, working part time, consulting or volunteering with different organisations, becoming grandparents rather than parents. This is a time that some of us travel more or relocate. Each time meeting new people and naturally loosening the bonds with some of our previous connections. It’s important to deepen new relationships and also stay in touch or reconnect with some of our previous friends.
  • Transitioning to a new life stage may mean having periods of feeling isolated and lonely. Look for interesting activities to do. Choose some that provide regular social connections through the week. Others can be less frequent outings that you can anticipate with pleasure.
  • Fostering connections sometimes involves getting out of your comfort zone to ‘show up’ at social events or activities. Create opportunities to engage with others or join groups that interest you. Work out whether you are a person who prefers deep connection with one or a few others; or enjoy the energy and buzz of mingling in larger crowds. Honour this personal preference in the types and duration of interactions you plan.
  • It’s also important to balance social connection with time alone to pursue your creativity and interests. Now you can be less focused on the clock and more immersed in what you enjoy doing. Often these solo pursuits lead naturally to interactions with others who share the same interest.

Finding meaning and purpose

  • As humans, we gain deep meaning from the roles of raising children and through our work. It can be daunting to step away from these roles and to find new perspectives in regard to our purpose in the world.
  • Ikigai – The Japanese Secret of a Long and Happy Life written by Garcia and Miralles makes the strong connection between having a deep sense of purpose and contribution and living longer. We each need a reason to get up in the morning and where we may find it is in examining our personal qualities – what we are good at, those things we love – our passions and interests and what the world (or even our small slice of it) needs which can become our mission. Having the confidence to share our unique gifts with the world often opens up additional opportunities for connection and contribution.
  • Life will continue to challenge us and be stressful. This isn’t a negative thing as often the hurdles in life motivate our action and when we are not overwhelmed can contribute to our sense of vitality and self-reliance.

Cultivating Gratitude

  • Dr Rick Hanson suggests gratitude can be a daily practice of appreciating the ‘ordinary jewels’ of our everyday life. These can include the roof over our head, enough food to nourish our bodies and experiencing love and care in our relationships. We can be grateful for others who contribute to our physical and emotional well-being. Find ways to acknowledge and show your appreciation.
  • Gratitude is strongly linked to our sense of happiness. It also lifts our mood, increases life satisfaction and helps us build resilience. As we age, research has shown we also tend to become naturally happier. Perhaps part of this is being able to see a wider, more balanced view of life. With experience we can appreciate the sweet moments without denying or minimizing the bitter experiences endured. We see the life lessons and personal growth that may have occurred during our more difficult times.
  • Gratitude shifts our attention away from resentment, regret and guilt. Rather than focusing on either the ‘poor me’ or ‘those bad people’(blaming others) stories that ruminate in our brain we can pause and notice what we are saying to ourselves. It requires being in the present moment, basically accepting life as it is and asking instead ‘what should be done from now on’. It is impossible to go back and rewrite the past. Acceptance and finding courage to seek happiness going forward is a good strategy. Read more about this in the book The Courage to be Happy (Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga).
  • To reap the rewards of gratitude make it a regular practice. It is also important to delve more deeply into what we are grateful for. The first step is placing awareness and attention on a good fact about your life. Take it in with your senses and feel the natural emotional responses surrounding the thought. Notice the details and stay with the moment of appreciation for a while longer. Repeating this practice regularly will help the habit of gratitude grow in your life.
  • Gratitude is not just about ourselves. It should also be extended to feelings of happiness for the wonderful things in the lives of others. This helps us overcome jealousy and envy. Unhappiness and suffering come from comparing ourselves and our lives with others.
  • What may help is realizing we are only getting a glimpse into people’s lives. Others may seem fortunate, blessed with relationships or material possessions we don’t have. Yet we rarely know the challenges and pain they may also be facing. Much of what happens in our lives is the result of a vast network of causes which we have little influence over. Each of us are travelling along our own unique path in life. It’s helpful to shift the focus back to the things that are good in our own circumstances.

All of us, if we are fortunate, will inevitably age. Seeing aging as a wonderful gift of additional years can help us focus on doing the task well. It requires active steps to stay engaged with life and each other. To care for not only our physical needs but also our social and psychological needs. This will allow us to continue enjoying each day and to make valuable contributions to our world.

What You Yearn For

Yearning is a powerful sensation. It incorporates what we long for, crave and desire in this lifetime. In many ways it limits us, as we don’t feel completely satisfied with where we are in any given moment. In other ways, it is a major motivator for striving for what we believe is truly important to us.

So what do you yearn for?

  • Is it the sense of feeling safe and at peace with your relationships and surroundings?
  • Is it longing for a sense of deep life satisfaction? The ability to be authentically yourself and to pursue those things that really matter to you.
  • Is it feeling a sense of being loved and deeply connected to others.

These by-products of our basic needs – for safety, satisfaction and connection, are shared by a most of us. They make us feel a sense of calm and contentment. They make life worth living and give us purpose. When met, they soothe our mind and body.

We come into this world completely dependent on others to supply these basic needs. To feed, clothe, comfort and engage with us. Over time we acquire inner resources and recognize strategies to meet these needs for ourselves. Not in perfect ways, but in ways that we hope move us closer to our ‘idealized’ expectation of life. The gap between what we perceive as our current reality and our desires is where our yearning resides.

For women, midlife and menopause are opportunities to reassess their lives. It’s a natural transition where in a sense we are becoming different ‘beings’. Our hormones and bodies are changing. Our worldly priorities are also evolving. It almost feels like the cycle of caterpillar to butterfly where we transform the notion of who we are. A midlife reset.

It is not an easy one as we become increasingly aware of the reality of aging and our impermanence. Previously we could ignore the obvious signs in our busy lives. But sooner or later we are confronted with ourselves in the mirror. The ‘fork in the road’ moment of denial or acceptance of who we are. That doesn’t mean not striving for well-lived years ahead and maintaining our health and well-being. What it may mean though is adjusting to enjoying life in different ways. Mindful of balancing our energy and activity. Making sure we maintain good nutritional and sleep habits.

Midlife is also a time to take stock of what we believe about ourselves. Susan Willson in her book Making Sense of Menopause provides some wonderful wisdom and questions to ponder. She speaks of the analogy of a ‘string of pearls’ where each bead is a story we believe and talk to others about our lives. Often these particular stories of the past are repeated and become a solid part of our sense of identity. Yet what if we had chosen different past stories to focus and identify with? Perhaps we would also have a different sense of our current self. Her thought provoking questions about what has informed our ‘life story’ are insightful work.

I recently did her ‘string of pearls’ exercise and found many of the beliefs I had about my own life were either no longer relevant or previously could have been replaced with alternate views. While it wasn’t an easy exercise it did give me a wonderful awareness that I could, in a sense, refresh my life story. Knowing that gave me a beautiful sense of control of my current view of myself and my life. It also helped me to crystallise what was still important and purposeful looking ahead.

What we yearn for in life is where our emotional work is. To examine and if needed discard what is no longer relevant and know we can re-write beliefs we may have carried for a long time. We can string a new set of pearls to represent our life. Time is precious and knowing authentically who we are allows us to choose the path ahead with more assurance and certainty.
